Two new Vocabulary words of the day!!

Engross (ed) ~ Foreseeable
1. Engrossed ~ adj. When you’re engrossed in something, you’re so consumed by it that you don’t notice anything else, like when you’re engrossed in a conversation with that cute girl from your math class. Use the adjective engrossed to describe someone who is completely absorbed in something, whether it’s a task, a person, or an object. You might be engrossed in a movie that’s so good you just can’t look away, or you can be engrossed in talking to someone — like the girl from math class. Engrossed is often used with “in” — so you’d say you were “engrossed in” a book or “engrossed in” your homework.
2. Foreseeable ~ adj. If you know something’s coming, it’s foreseeable. Foreseeable things can be predicted or guessed ahead of time. If there’s no money for you in the foreseeable future, you better get a job. The adjective foreseeable most often turns up in the phrase "the foreseeable future," which basically means "as far in the future as I can predict." The meaning is in the word – it’s the “before” you’re “able” to “see.” You might be so mad at your sister that you tell her you won"t drive her to school for the foreseeable future — in other words, you can"t, at this point, imagine a time when you"ll be willing to give her a ride.
1... (a) She was so engrossed by/in the book that she forgot the cookies in the oven. (b) Bob was so engrossed in his music, he didn"t hear the knock on the door. (c) For the last few weeks, sports fans were totally engrossed in the FIFA international games.

Throng~ Illiterate
1. Throng~ n. Athrongis a large crowd of people or animals. On the crowded platform, thethrongof passengers attempted to push their way into the already overcrowded subway car. When used as a noun, throngmeans a tightly packed crowd of people or animals. As a verb, it means to push together or squeeze into an area. The science fiction movie fans thronged into the auditorium when they heard their favorite actor had entered the building. The word comes to us from the Middle English term meaning "push" or "force one"s way," which is exactly what you"d have to do if you got stuck inside a throng of people.
2. Illiterate ~ adj. You can describe a person unable to read or write asilliterate. Karaoke, which involves singing out the words to songs as they scroll across a big screen, requires the ability to read. If you’reilliterate, you won’t be able to participate. Illiterate, from the Latinilliteratus“unlearned, ignorant,” can describe someone unable to read or write, but it can also imply that a person lacks cultural awareness. However, Walt Whitman saw a unique beauty to illiteracy: “There is that indescribable freshness and unconsciousness about anilliterateperson that humbles and mocks the power of the noblest expressive genius.”
1... (a) After the wedding, you toss your bouquet at throngs of single but hopeful women. (b) When the game ended, a throng of fans carried some of the winning players off the field.(c) On Black Friday, as soon as the store opened at 5 am, a throng of customers rushed through the doors to get the limited deals.(d) As soon as the disgraced politician saw the throng of reporters at his front door, he climbed out of a side window and ran down the street.
Long, long ago there was a very foolish thief. Do you know what he did one day? When he wanted to steal the bell on his neighbor’s door, he walked up to the door, took hold of the bell and pulled hard. The bell made a very loud noise. The thief was afraid and went home.
Then he sat down to think, “I must do something about the noise,” he said. He thought and thought. At last he had an idea. “Ah, I’ll put some cotton in my ears. Then I won’t be able to hear the noise.” The next day he went to the door of his neighbor, and took hold of the bell. This time he pulled even harder.
The bell rang loudly, but the thief did not hear anything. With another hard pull he got the bell out. Just then the neighbor came running out. “Steal my bell? I’ll teach you a lesson,”the angry man shouted. And he hit the thief on the nose.
The foolish thief did not know how the neighbor found out he was stealing the bell. “Why did he come out just then?” he wondered.
Once, there was a poor boy who made a living by selling various objects from door to door. This was the way he earned money to pay for his school.
One day, as he was walking from house to house as usual, he felt very hungry and weak. He felt that he couldn"t walk even a few steps. He decided to ask for food at a house. He knocked on the door and was stunned to see a beautiful young girl open the door. With much hesitation, he asked the girl for a glass of water.
The young girl understood his condition and offered him a huge glass of milk. With an astonished look, the boy drank the milk very slowly.
"How much do I owe you for this milk?" he asked her.
The girl replied, "I do not want any money for this."
The boy thanked the girl from the bottom of his heart and left the place.
Years passed by. The young girl grew up. In her youth, unfortunately, she fell ill and was diagnosed with the rarest kind of nervous disorder. Many experienced doctors were baffled at her condition, and she was admitted in the city hospital with the most advanced facilities.
Dr. Kevin, a renowned neuro specialist was called in by the hospital to examine her. Even with his extraordinary expertise, Dr. Kevin found the girl"s illness very hard to cure. However, with perseverance and hard work that lasted months, he was finally able to get the disease under control. With careful medication and monitoring, the girl was completely cured in the end.
Everyone praised the doctor, but the girl was quite worried about how much the hospital bill would come to. Her family had just a little money kept away in the bank, which was by no means enough to pay for such a long treatment in that reputed hospital.
The girl was given the hospital bill finally. With trembling hands, she opened it. She was stunned to see that the bill had been crossed out and cancelled, and there was a note underneath signed by Dr. Kevin.
"Bill paid years ago with a glass of milk!"

Chapter 4 - The Rabbit Decides to Send in a Little Bill for Help
Firstcontinuingalittlebitfromyesterday...
... She decided to good-naturedly join in the hunt, but she wasn"t able to see the Rabbit"s belongings anywhere.
... In fact, everything was different since her swim in the pool. The great hall, the glass table, and the little door had all completely vanished.
The Rabbit stopped in front of Alice and rudely called to her, "Why, Mary Ann, what on earth are you doing down here? Run home this minute and bring me a pair of gloves and my fan. Be quick about it now."
"I think he"s mistaken me for his housemaid," said Alice. Quickly, as she was frightened about upsetting the Rabbit even further, she ran off in the direction of the Rabbit"s house. "I"m sure he"ll be very surprised when he finds out I"m not Mary Ann.

Farmer John and Farmer Bob were neighbors. For more than 30 years, they had been getting along very well.
Then their good relationship broke. It began with a small thing, then bitter words, and then weeks of silence. One morning Farmer John woke up to find a stream between the two farms. “It must be Bob,” John thought.
Then one day there was a knock on John’s door. He opened it to find a carpenter standing at the doorway.
“I’m looking for a few days’ work,” the carpenter said.
“I do have a job for you,” John said. “Look across the stream at that farm. That’s my neighbor Bob. He dug a stream between the two farms. I want you to build a fence—an 8-foot fence. I don’t want to see his place or his face any more. I don’t have such a neighbor!”
The carpenter said, “I think I know what to do, sir, and I’ll be able to do a job that pleases you.”
Farmer John helped the carpenter get the materials ready and then he was off for the day.
About sunset when the farmer returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. The farmer’s eyes opened wide. There was no fence there at all!
It was a bridge! And the neighbor, Bob, was coming across, with his hand outstretched(伸出). “Hi, John! You’re quite a fellow to build this bridge!”
Then they met in the middle, taking each other’s hands. “I’m terribly sorry for what I have said and done. We should be good to each other,” said Farmer Bob.
Then they turned to see the carpenter, who was ready to go. “No, wait! Stay a few days. I have a lot of other jobs for you,” said Farmer John. “I’d love to stay,” the carpenter said, “but I have more bridges to build.”
Today I Decided to Stop Waiting for You
Never have I thought that there would come a day that I"d be sure of finally walking away from you.
I"d been telling myself that I"d be willing to wait,
reassuring myself that one day you"ll come back to me and we"d be able to continue where we"d left off;
反复安慰自己有一天你会回来,而后我们可以再续前缘;
when everything was too beautiful to even believe.
These days, however, the thought of you hasn"t been clouding my mind anymore.
The pain that once held me back from getting out of bed is now long gone.
Now I"m certain that no matter how great our love could have been,
So, despite the fact that I had fallen in love with you more than I could ever with anyone else so far,
what I"m trying to say is that maybe it"s for the best to move on with my life, and from you, instead of hoping.
Because of you, I"ve finally begun to appreciate the value of time. You were my miracle when I was already giving up.
Anyways, you were right all along when you said I should be thankful.
Hopefully enough, you believe me when I say thank you for making my heart feel whole again.
But if there will ever come a time that we meet coincidentally,
or if you come knocking on my door again, maybe I might let you back in.
It"s just that today, I"ve finally decided to stop waiting.
